Global IT expenditure continues to rise

09/02/2012 14:57:31 (Europe/London)

Expenditure in the tech sector is continuing to rise on a global scale - despite the fact that many IT experts are reining in their purchasing because of the tough economic climate.

New research from the International Data Corporation (IDC) the tech sector is performing much better than other industries.

The rise in tech spending is being driven by a so-called "data explosion", according to Deloitte, another research firm in the sector. The need for increased data storage is also driving IT recruitment and Deloitte believes a further 190,000 IT professionals will be needed in the US alone in the next five years.

IDC thinks that the European financial crisis could have a negative impact on IT spending in the coming year.

However, the firm's vice president of IDC's Global Technology and Industry Research Organization, said: "In a downside scenario, things could get much uglier in Europe and have a ripple effect through other regions. But leading indicators in the US have improved in recent months, and emerging markets show no signs of a slowdown yet."

The strongest area of growth in terms of improved IT spending was the smartphone market, which leapt by 46 per cent.
