Functional Analyst - Utilities (Brussels)

Function Description:

For its development team working on in-house developed software, this company within the utility sector is actively looking for an hands-on agile functional analyst with good communication capacities

Who will be able to:

  • Work in a software development team, incrementally developing working software in sprints
  • Understand business processes and requirements related to HR domains
  • Analyse business requirements and translate them into the most appropriate conceptual model, while respecting the existing architecture and systems
  • Document the chosen solution into functional and technical specifications using the standard tools and methodology
  • Clearly identify components that will be purchased and components that will be developed, including for all interfaces between applications
  • For purchased components, assist the project manager in selecting off-the-shelf applications, participate to the implementation/configuration of those applications
  • For in-house developed components, assist the developers in producing high quality products, based on defined specifications
  • Assist the product owner in the refinement of the product backlog
  • Participate in estimating the product backlog items
  • Create test scenarios and execute system tests
  • Assist the users during the execution of user acceptance tests
  • Provide support to end-users on production systems
  • Manage the operational relation with providers of integrated tools/applications
  • Collaborate closely with the business entities in all steps of the development and support process.


  • Analyse business requirements and translate them to clear and concise user stories
  • Create business process and functional system documentation using UML (use case diagrams, activity diagrams, information models...)
  • Create and execute test scenarios on different levels (component, system, UAT)
  • Define an "action plan" to deliver user stories by helping the team to break down user stories in tasks
  • Raise impediments to the scrum master in time
  • Review functional documentation of peers

Experience & expertise:

  • Good analytic and synthesising skills to clearly define problems and requirements and determine solutions with controllable impact for them on mission-critical applications
  • Good knowledge of UML
  • Experience working in agile and non-agile software development teams
  • Experience providing support to end users
  • Background knowledge in the human resource management domain is an asset.
  • Additional background knowledge in electronic document management, application architecture, the MS Dynamics platform or web design techniques is a plus.

Technical Skills:

  • UML modeling tools (e.g. Sparx Enterprise Architect)
  • Agile software development tools (e.g. MS Visual Studio Team System)
  • Documentation-communication tools (e.g. Microsoft Office)

Communication Skills:

  • Skills to interview end users: listening actively to their needs, asking the right questions and interpreting the answers correctly
  • Ability to work and communicate in a team (e.g. work together with developers to explain analysis or to review developed code, escalate impediments to scrum master…)
  • Ability to demo / discuss the sprint result with end users during a sprint review session and to guide end users in acceptance testing
