The Future is Digital – a roundup of the 2015 Gartner Symposium

The Gartner Symposium/ITxpo describes itself as ‘the world’s most important gathering of CIOs and Senior IT Executives’. It is the industry’s most hotly anticipated annual event; it unveils game-changing ideas, shares knowledge and analyses the trends that shape IT and business.

Over the course of a week more than 24,000 attendees viewed 5700 presentation slides and listened to more than 250 presentations. Computer Futures was there all week, here’s what we took away from our experience.

Nexus of Forces

The Nexus of Forces is a term coined by Gartner to describe the convergence of mobile, social, cloud and information. The traditional way of thinking is being challenged – we are already starting to see an integration of technologies and this will only increase as advances in technology evolve. Agility and diversity in the workforce will be essential in the coming years. Technology is advancing so quickly that longterm projections are often no more than two or three years ahead, and companies will have to factor this into their hiring strategies to remain adaptable.

Internet of Things

The Nexus of Forces is married to the physical word of the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things is the creation of new business designs that combine the virtual and the physical worlds. It is distinct from digital marketing and digital business. It is what happens when digital is interwoven into every physical element we encounter and every service we use. It’s in our home, our office and in every possible man-made appliance we use. We’re not fully there yet, but it’s on the horizon and businesses need to think about how they will adapt their approach when every company becomes a technology company, by default.
