6 Secrets to Efficient (and bearable) Remote Working

Being able and allowed to work from home is comfortable and easy for some people, but for others, it presents a different type of challenge than working in the usual office. With these six secret tips, you'll work more efficiently from home and make it more bearable long-term.

Rhythm is important

Even if you work from home or another location, it is important that you keep a 'normal' rhythm. After all, a rhythm is good for mental health. There is a bit more freedom in start and end times, but to stay in your own skin it is not recommended to deviate much from the usual working hours. A regular morning routine is an important part of this!

Try to provide a calm environment

This is of course easier said than done, especially when you have to take into account, for example, children or pets. Try to create a quiet place where you can withdraw, so you can make important phone calls without distractions and work fully focused. Is there a room in the house that you can temporarily turn into an office?

Avoid other distractions

Use apps that limit the use of social media. Prepare meals in advance so that you do not have an unexpected long time in the kitchen during lunch and ensure that you do not always have to deal with household chores that still have to be done at your workplace.

Communicate with your colleagues

Burning questions? Do not underestimate the power of a phone call. Pick up the phone and dial. Make sure that you and your colleagues are on the same page, even if the communication at home is different than usual. This can also extend to utilizing cloud-based project management software to share project progress and centralize documents for streamlined success.

Pretend you're in the office

If you find it difficult to get into work mode at home, it is best to pretend that you are 'just' in the office. Dress neatly, designate a place in your home as your new workplace and separate work from private by working on work-related matters there too. Try to organize your day as you would in the office and make good use of your usual planning tools. The best kept secret here is to get out of your pjs! It does wonders for your brain to experience the flow of a morning routine that involves good hygiene and fresh clothes. 

Schedule breaks

In a full office, you are more likely to get the most out of your breaks. Do you work from home alone? Then really make sure you can distance yourself from work when necessary. Also, try to leave the house every now and then by taking a walk outside or running errands. Keeping yourself active also a great way to keep blood flow to the brain for better focus, so try to get up and move around with consistency throughout the day.
