Before Covid-19, the largest disruptions to work tended to involve new technologies and trade links.
Since the pandemic, organizations have been forced to reimagine customer journeys. Industries that previously placed a strong emphasis on physical presence have been forced to embrace virtual and remote working environments and most have found benefits in doing so.
39% of U.S. candidates prefer a hybrid workplace model.
A recent report by McKinsey & Company considered tasks that could be done remotely without any loss of productivity and found that between 20% and 25% of the 2,000 tasks analyzed fell into this category. This represents four or five times more remote working than before the pandemic. We see a large-scale change in the geography of work as both individuals and companies move out of large cities.
Candidates have embraced the workplace reality of flexible working. 41% said they wanted to work remotely while 39% favored a hybrid workplace model. In the U.S., remote working is even more popular among candidates, with 60% saying they wanted to work remotely. Only 2% of U.S. respondents said they wanted to be purely office based.
Offering remote and hybrid working as well as higher wages is likely to become an increasingly important incentive. Almost all job growth is likely to come from high-wage jobs such as technology-related positions. In fact, it is predicted that the STEM jobs as a proportion of total employment in the U.S. will increase by between 1%-2.7% by 2030.1
